SASWMP

Southern Arava Sustainable Waste Management Plan

Pilot Monitoring and Study

This task  project established  and implemented  ongoing monitoring and study of the two pilot wetlands projects.

The purpose of the monitoring is three-fold:

1. Functionally monitor proper operation of the pilot projects

2. Provide interim test results for adjusting the implementation plan

3. Provide test results for dissemination of the model to enable replication in other areas in Israel and internationally and prepare the protocol for desert-based constructed wetlands for agricultural waste.

Mr. Yoram Tensher  implemented  the project, using the existing lab facilities  at Neot Smadar

To achieve these goals  SASWMP has contracted  a team at Ben Gurion University’s Drylands Technologies department, headed by  Professor Avi Golan . The  BGU team supervised the following:

Þ Design of  protocol for water testing, including effective test points, quantification and qualification of tests, and maintenance of database.

Þ Establishment of  an effective list of tests, with minimum testing of heavy metals, including all tests demanded by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environment.

Þ Direction of  the analysis of the lab tests: biomass, water quality and the success of the vegetation types, which  will generate a series of monthly and quarterly reports and  a yearly summary. The analysis of these tests will give an indication of the feasibility for similar projects in desert environments around the world.

Þ Provision  the critical scientific backing and close assistance necessary for the writing of protocols for setting up and implementing desert environment CW,  and the resulting dissemination of the protocols in scientific and professional journals.
